Bridge Tolling Overview
Tolls are collected electronically on all Bay Area bridges—there are no cash lanes. The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District manages operations on the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) manages toll revenue from the seven state-owned toll bridges. However, toll payments for all eight Bay Area bridges are processed through FasTrak®, which is also managed by BATA.
As of January 1, 2026 the carpool requirements have changed on all Bay Area bridges except the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. Visit GetFasTrak.org to learn more about the new carpool rules.
FasTrak®
There are several options for paying tolls through FasTrak:
FasTrak Toll Tags
When you open a FasTrak account, you’ll receive a toll tag (transponder) to place in your vehicle. This toll tag automatically tracks and charges your tolls from your prepaid account as you pass through toll locations. Learn how to open a FasTrak account and more on our Get FasTrak page.
Toll Invoice
If you cross a toll bridge without a FasTrak toll tag or License Plate Account, a toll invoice will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
The toll is billed to the address registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Additional fees may apply if the toll is not paid promptly.
Payments can be made online, by phone, or by mail. Pay a Toll Invoice or Violation Notice.
License Plate Accounts
License Plate Accounts are an alternative to using a FasTrak toll tag. With these accounts, bridge tolls are automatically charged based on your vehicle’s license plate. There are two types:
Long-Term License Plate Account
A Long-Term License Plate Account is ideal for frequent bridge users who don’t want to carry a toll tag.
- Tolls are automatically charged to your linked payment method.
- Not recommended for rental vehicles.
- Cannot be used for express lanes or to qualify for carpool discounts.
Short-Term License Plate Account
Designed for temporary users or one-time trips, a Short-Term License Plate Account is perfect for visitors or rental car drivers.
- Pay tolls from the past 48 hours or for travel up to 30 days in the future.
- Rental vehicles can use this option if not enrolled in a toll payment program.
- Cannot be used for express lanes or carpool lane access.
