Carpool & Express Lanes

Carpool lanes, also known as High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, are reserved for carpools, vanpools, buses, motorcycles, and eligible clean air vehicles during designated commute hours. Other vehicles are not allowed. HOV lane hours and carpool occupancy requirements vary by location. Outside of commute hours, these lanes are open to general traffic.

Express Lanes allow vehicles to pay full or discounted tolls, or travel toll-free depending on the lane’s operating requirements, to bypass traffic. Toll rates adjust dynamically, increasing with heavier traffic and decreasing when traffic is lighter.

As of January 1, 2026 the carpool requirements have changed on all Bay Area bridges except the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. Visit GetFasTrak.org learn more about the new carpool rules.
